Up at the head of the early market, Jilly Cooper might struggle for speed in the closing stages now switching from Tapeta to the quickest of the Polytrack circuits and racing off a career-high mark.
Secret Strength deserves his place near the top of the market following a comfortable course/distance win two weeks ago. That was in lower grade but it represented a major return to form on his third run back from a break.
But one who can beat him today is the extremely well-handicapped seven-year-old Mohareb, who looks to exploit a career-low mark after his promising recent run at Kempton, which was his first for 133 days and his first over this seven-furlong trip since January last year.
Understandably a bit keen, he had no hope of beating the highly impressive odds-on favourite, Kingdom Come (now rated 95), but he missed the places by only half a length and he finished clear of the rest of that higher-tier Class 4 field.
14:20 (Lingfield) Mohareb
Now down two pounds and sure to come on again for the run, Mohareb returns to the scene of his career-best performance, which came over this very trip as a three-year-old, when he was carrying eight pounds more than today.
Strangely, he raced only once over this distance during the whole of last year with his connections preferring to concentrate on sprinting.
The plan didn't really work because, after his solitary six-furlong win (in Class 3) at the start of last year, he didn't manage to win any of his eight subsequent six-furlong runs during the year (plus one over five).
Off his reduced mark of 78, now is the time to revert to the preferred seven-furlong trip over which six of his top eight performances have come (including two of his top three).
From his four previous runs over today's course and distance, he has only once finished out of the first three, and those runs include an easy win in today's grade as well as a short-head defeat in a 12-runner Class 3 (off 86) and a neck defeat in an even higher-graded Class 2 (off 91).
He wouldn't need to be anywhere near as good as he was in those races to be a major player in today's company, and his recent return to action run bodes well for his return here, not least because it was the best of his last four runs on the right-handed Kempton circuit where he has never won.
Significantly, the rider who was in the saddle for his last two wins, Theodore Ladd, is back to partner him for the first time in nearly a year and the partnership has a handy draw in stall 4.
