13.50 Ascot - Corach Rambler

Forecast favourite Does He Know is the best of these at today's weights for this 3m Grade 2 contest, but there are grounds for taking him on at shortish odds.
For one, the ground conditions will be against him. While he's won on good to soft, that coming over hurdles, he's considered to be a good-ground horse.
He's also far from straightforward with his connections describing him as being a 'bit of a headcase on the racecourse' and 'quirky',
Given the prospect of heavy ground, stamina is going to be at a premium and that's bad news for Annual Invictus, who has yet to race beyond 2m4f, whereas Corach Rambler will be in his element.
Lucinda Russell's eight-year-old looked a useful staying novice chaser in the making in winning handicaps at Aintree and Cheltenham, before struggling off top weight in the 3m5f Classic Chase, albeit he didn't give up trying and plugged on into fourth.
He stays all day - connections have mentioned the Scottish National as a possible target - and deserves another here to confirm his undoubted potential. He might even go off favourite.

14.05 Haydock - Third Wind

Thomas Darby could only finish fourth behind Champ in the Grade 1 Cleeve Hurdle last time out, but that wasn't a bad effort by any means and this drop in grade affords him a good opportunity to get back to winning ways.

He doesn't always find much for pressure, though, and stuck his head in the air when fourth in another Grade 2 at Wetherby on his reappearance.
So, for all he's the clear best of these on official ratings, he's perhaps not one to take a short price about and narrow preference is for Third Wind, who could have done with a stronger gallop to aim at when claiming third close home in a Pertemps qualifier won by Sporting John at Warwick last month.
A strong stayer at this trip as he showed when winning this contest 12 months ago in testing conditions - he could have won by further than his three-quarters of a length winning margin had he not idled close home - he can make his stamina tell once again.
Mollys Ollys Wishes, who is 2-2 over 3m, is very much respected in receipt of the sex allowance, although she's done all her winning in mares' only events.

14.25 Ascot - Fortescue each-way

It's doubtful whether Fiddlerontheroof will be at full fitness for this 3m handicap chase with bigger targets to come in the spring, with the Tizzards surely leaving something to work on, and he can be opposed off top weight and at cramped odds.
Harry Fry's progressive stayer Ask Me Early is next in the betting at the time of writing but he has also been declared for a race at Wincanton, which is his first preference.
In his likely absence, the one that makes most appeal is Henry Daley's Fortescue, a consistent and likeable sort who ran right up to his best when third behind Royale Pagaille in last month's Peter Marsh.
Today's strip on soft ground is just about ideal for him and the switch back to a right-handed track might serve him well too given that three of his five chase wins have been when racing that way around.
That provides plenty of encouragement that he can defy a career-high mark and that Hugh Nugent, who has twice ridden him to victory, is claiming 5lb off his back is going to help him in that respect.

14.40 Haydock - The Galloping Bear

Likely favourite Secret Reprieve is most unlikely to get into the Grand National field given his rating of 138 - 145 was the minimum last year - but he is absolutely a player in this 3m4f Trial for the Aintree marathon.

Evan Williams' gelding failed to land a blow when defending his crown in the Welsh National just after Christmas, finishing a distant fifth behind easy winner Iwilldoit as favourite, but the lack of a recent run seemingly told on him.
That said, his form away from Chepstow is far from stellar and he's twice been beaten at this track, so we're going to take him on at the forecast odds.
Lord Du Mesnil, whose last two victories have come over course and distance, including last year's renewal, was considered but preference at bigger odds is for Ben Clarke's The Galloping Bear, who is now 3-3 over fences and is clearly well at home in these conditions.

A prolific point winner, he has quickly become the flag-bearer for his small Sussex-based stable, with his only defeat coming over hurdles at Chepstow in December (still in contention when falling), and this race was mentioned as a target after his most recent success in teh Surrey National at Lingfield (3m5f, heavy).

The key to him is the ground - the softer the better - and it's doubtful his revised handicap mark of 140, which translates to a lovely racing weight of 10st 7lb, is the ceiling on his ability.

15.00 Ascot - Zacony Rebel

Good Risk At All was expected to make up into a useful hurdler on the back on some strong bumper form last season, but he's yet to get off the mark after three attempts, twice when heavily punted, and is one to have reservations about.
He did well to finish as close as he did at Warwick last time out, having jumped two out slowly and then wandering under pressure, similar to when second on his hurdles debut, and while he might do better now handicapping he is readily opposed at the odds.
Cap Du Mathan should go well again, despite being hiked 9lb for laughing at the handicapper at Taunton last time, but preference is for Toby Lawes' Zacony Rebel at a few points longer in the betting.
Granted he didn't have much to beat at Ludlow in January but he won that 2m novices' contest hard held, and had shown enough when a narrow second in a Huntingdon handicap previously to suggest he can win off his current mark (127).
With plenty of stamina in his pedigree, today's longer trip may well bring about some further improvement too and he can provide his small stable, which is operating at a 1-4 strike rate (11-44) this season, with its biggest win to date.

15.20 Wincanton - Goshen

The selection has to be last year's easy winner Goshen, who returned to winning ways at Sandown 14 days ago and is just about the best British 2m hurdler when he has conditions to suit - much like 12 months ago when he effortlessly drew clear of multiple Grade 2 winner Song For Someone.
He'll make an exciting 2m novice chaser next season, should connections go down that route that him, with plenty of opportunities for him at the likes of Sandown (where he's 3-3), Ascot and Kempton, but he can win again over hurdles and this looks a golden opportunity against just three rivals.

Of those, only Adagio can be seriously fancied getting 3lb off the favourite, but last year's Triumph Hurdle third hasn't been seen out since finishing second in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in November and may just need the outing.

15.38 Ascot (Betfair Ascot Chase) - Saint Calvados

Several of these will be running in next month's Ryanair and Fakir D'oudaries, who finished second in last year's renewal of that Cheltenham Grade 1, albeit a long way behind Allaho, before going on to win an Aintree Grade 1, is a deserving favourite.
Joseph O'Brien's seven-year-old rarely runs a bad race but he is prone to the odd sloppy mistake and almost came down at the first fence at Thurles last month, before completing (jumped fine on the final circuit) to again chase home Allaho at a similar distance to the Ryanair.
The British challenge looks strong and last year's winner Dashel Drasher has to be thereabouts at a course he loves - 3-4 here with his only defeat coming on his seasonal reappearance on ground faster than ideal - having almost won a valuable chase at Lingfield on his most recent outing. This is a stronger renewal, however.

Fanion D'Estruval, a distant fifth in the Ryanair, has been competing in handicaps this season, so this is a huge step up, but he's a young horse and doesn't have much to find on the official ratings. His stable remains in cracking form.

Mister Fisher returned to winnings ways last time at Kempton and that form was boosted when the runner-up Eldorado Allen went one better in the Denman Chase. Nicky Henderson's charge would prefer better ground than he's going to get here, though.
On the other hand, testing conditions are just fine for Paul Nicholls' Saint Calvados, who is entitled to improve on his comeback third in the King George on his stable debut. Having his first start for 323 days and his first after wind surgery, he got tired late on having been rushed into the lead four out.
He clearly retains plenty of talent and while his stamina for 3m remains under question, this intermediate trip of 2m5f could prove ideal for him. So in the hope he can run a personal best - probably required to repel the Irish raider - he gets the vote at the respective odds.
